Choose a method that fits the plant
- Seed — Beginner
- Useful for vegetables, annual flowers, herbs, and many perennials. A seed-grown plant may not reproduce every trait of a named cultivar.
- Stem or leaf cutting — Beginner to Intermediate
- A suitable piece of a parent plant forms roots and new growth. Success depends strongly on plant type and tissue maturity.
- Division, offsets, or runners — Beginner
- An established plant is separated along naturally rooted crowns, shoots, or daughter plants.
- Layering — Intermediate
- A stem develops roots while it remains attached to the parent, reducing water stress during rooting.
- Rhizome, tuber, bulb, or corm — Beginner to Intermediate
- A plant is reproduced from a suitable underground stem, storage organ, offset, or division.
- Grafting or budding — Advanced
- Compatible stock and scion tissues are joined. Accurate cuts, timing, aftercare, and tool safety are essential.
Start plants from seed
Use viable seed, clean containers with drainage or a prepared seedbed, an appropriate starting medium, water, and labels. Optional lights, a humidity cover, or bottom heat should match the seed and growing environment rather than being treated as universal requirements.
For direct sowing, prepare a loose, weed-free area, sow at the recommended depth and spacing, cover and firm gently, then keep the seed zone consistently moist until emergence.
- Check the seed packet or a reliable plant-specific source for sowing depth, temperature, light, and timing.
- Moisten the starting medium and fill clean containers that have drainage holes.
- Sow at the recommended depth, label the plant and date, and water gently enough to avoid displacing seed.
- Maintain the required temperature and even moisture without leaving the medium waterlogged.
- Provide strong light as soon as seedlings emerge, then thin or pot them up when needed.
- Harden seedlings gradually before transplanting them outdoors at the appropriate time and spacing.
Use seed treatments only when required
- Soaking
- Larger or hard-coated seed may be soaked for a plant-specific period, drained, and sown promptly.
- Scarification
- A hard seed coat is lightly abraded or nicked so water can enter. Cutting too deeply can injure the embryo and kill the seed.
- Cold stratification
- Seed is kept in cold, moist conditions for the temperature and duration required by that plant, then sown.
- Warm or double stratification
- Some woody plants need an ordered warm and cold sequence. Use only a species-specific temperature and duration.
- Winter sowing
- Suitable seed is placed outdoors in a ventilated, draining container so normal seasonal conditions provide chilling.
Root a stem or leaf cutting
Cuttings may be herbaceous, softwood, semi-hardwood, hardwood, nodal, cane, leaf, or root sections. The correct tissue, season, orientation, medium, and humidity depend on the plant.
- Choose healthy, disease-free parent growth and clean a sharp cutting tool.
- Take the recommended type and length of cutting, preserving nodes or other required growing tissue.
- Remove leaves that would be buried and reduce excessive leaf area only when appropriate.
- Apply rooting hormone only when the plant-specific method recommends it.
- Insert the cutting into a moist, well-drained propagation medium and firm it gently.
- Maintain appropriate humidity, moisture, and bright light while protecting unrooted material from excessive heat and direct sun.
- After roots and new growth are established, acclimate the plant gradually before potting or transplanting it.
Divide established or naturally spreading plants
- Division
- Separate a clump so every new piece has viable roots and a shoot, crown, or growing point; replant promptly at the correct depth.
- Offsets and pups
- Separate sufficiently developed daughter plants from the parent, preserving roots when present and allowing wounds to callus when the plant requires it.
- Runners and stolons
- Let a daughter plant root while attached, then sever it after it is established. Strawberries are a familiar example.
- Suckers
- A suitably rooted shoot may be separated, but a fruit-tree sucker below a graft union belongs to the rootstock rather than the named cultivar above it.
Root a stem while it remains attached
For simple layering, bend a flexible branch to moist soil, lightly wound it only when recommended, secure and cover the rooting portion, and leave the shoot tip exposed. Separate the new plant only after it has developed enough roots.
- Tip layering
- Bury the shoot tip so a new rooted shoot develops at the bend; this is used for suitable raspberries and blackberries.
- Compound layering
- Alternately bury and expose sections of a long flexible vine so several rooted plants can form.
- Mound or trench layering
- Cover the bases of new shoots or portions of a horizontal stem; these are more specialized woody-plant and rootstock techniques.
- Air layering
- Wound an above-ground stem, enclose the wound in moist rooting medium, and separate the stem after a substantial root system forms.
Propagate from underground stems and storage organs
- Rhizomes
- Cut a healthy horizontal underground stem into sections that each retain a viable bud or growing point.
- Stem tubers
- A potato can be divided into healthy pieces with viable eyes and enough stored tissue, then healed when recommended before planting.
- Tuberous roots
- Unlike a potato piece, a divided tuberous root generally needs attached crown or stem tissue containing a viable bud.
- Bulbs and corms
- Separate naturally formed offsets, bulblets, daughter bulbs, new corms, or cormels at the appropriate season.
Treat grafting and laboratory methods as advanced
Grafting joins a scion to a compatible rootstock. Budding uses a single bud. Both require healthy compatible material, correct orientation, smooth cuts, close cambium contact, secure wrapping, protection from drying, and careful aftercare.
Spore propagation requires a clean, controlled environment and includes a life stage unlike ordinary seed starting. Tissue culture requires sterile laboratory technique and controlled media. They are included here for orientation, not as casual beginner projects.
Apply the fundamentals every time
- Start with healthy, vigorous parent material unless a reviewed method specifically addresses plant rescue.
- Clean containers and tools, and sanitize cutting tools between plants when disease transmission is possible.
- Know where the nodes, buds, crown, graft union, and original top of a section are before making a cut.
- Keep the medium evenly moist when required, but preserve drainage and air around developing roots.
- Give unrooted material suitable light without excessive heat or water loss.
- Do not use fertilizer as a substitute for roots, and do not assume rooting hormone is always beneficial.
- Acclimate newly rooted or protected plants gradually before exposing them to ordinary outdoor conditions.
