Moist—not saturated—mix, crop-appropriate warmth, and light as soon as sprouts emerge
Read the seed packet first. Crop instructions override general rules, especially for sowing depth, temperature, light requirements, and whether the plant should be direct-sown outdoors.
What germination requires
Germination begins when a viable seed absorbs water and resumes growth. Most vegetable seeds need continuous moisture, oxygen around the seed, and a suitable temperature. Some species also respond to light or darkness.
Root crops and fast-growing or transplant-sensitive crops are often better direct-sown in their final location. Use the packet and your local planting calendar to decide where and when to sow.
1. Work backward from the planting date
Find the safe outdoor planting window for the crop, then subtract the indoor growing time shown on its packet or local calendar. Sowing too early can leave you with crowded, root-bound, or weak transplants before outdoor conditions are ready.
2. Prepare clean containers and mix
- Use clean containers at least about 2 inches deep with unobstructed drainage holes.
- Choose a lightweight, soilless growing medium rather than dense garden soil.
- Moisten the mix before filling containers. It should feel evenly damp, similar to a wrung-out sponge.
- Fill and level the cells without packing the mix tightly.
3. Sow at the correct depth
Follow the packet whenever it gives a depth. A useful general starting point is about twice the seed’s diameter, but very small or light-requiring seeds may stay on the surface or receive only a fine covering. Press gently so seed and moist mix make contact.
4. Label and water carefully
Label the crop, variety, and sowing date before trays look alike. Water gently enough that seeds do not float out of place. Keep the mix consistently moist while allowing excess water to drain; saturated mix displaces the oxygen seeds and new roots need.
5. Provide suitable warmth
University of Maryland Extension identifies 65–75°F mix temperature as a useful range for germinating many vegetables, but crop needs vary. Measure the growing medium rather than guessing from room temperature. A thermostatically controlled seedling heat mat can help warm-season crops; remove or adjust supplemental heat after emergence as the crop requires.
6. Manage humidity without trapping problems
A clear dome or loose plastic cover can slow moisture loss before germination. Keep it from touching the mix, check the tray daily, and remove it promptly when sprouts appear. Standing water, stale air, and constantly saturated media encourage seedling problems.
7. Give seedlings light immediately
Move emerged seedlings under a suitable grow light instead of leaving them in a dark germination spot. University of Maryland Extension recommends 14–16 hours of light daily for indoor vegetable seedlings, with fluorescent or LED fixtures commonly kept 2–6 inches above the plants. Follow the fixture instructions and adjust height as plants grow.
8. Thin and keep the strongest seedlings
After seedlings establish, remove extras so each cell has the space planned for it. Snipping unwanted seedlings at the mix surface avoids pulling against the roots of the keeper. Pot up crops that outgrow their starting cells before they become badly root-bound.
Troubleshoot germination
- Nothing emerged
- Check the expected germination time, seed age, mix temperature, sowing depth, and whether the tray dried after water absorption began.
- Only a few emerged
- Uneven moisture or temperature may be the cause. A counted paper-towel test can help estimate the remaining seed’s viability.
- Seedlings are leggy
- Move the light closer within its safe operating guidance, increase light intensity if needed, and avoid excess warmth after emergence.
- Stems collapse at the mix
- Remove affected seedlings. Improve sanitation, drainage, air movement, and watering practice before resowing.
- Green growth appears on mix
- The surface is staying wet for too long. Let it approach evenly moist before watering again and improve airflow without drying seedlings abruptly.

Keep checking daily. A tray can change quickly once the first seedling breaks the surface.
