Rotate plant families—not only crop names
Tomato followed by pepper is not a true rotation because both are nightshades and can share pests and diseases. Start by identifying every crop family that occupied the bed.
What crop rotation can do
Crop rotation moves susceptible plants away from soil and residue where family-specific pests or pathogens may persist. It can also vary rooting patterns and nutrient demand, and it encourages you to plan cover crops and soil-building periods instead of repeating one crop continuously.
Some pathogens, nematodes, and weeds survive for years or affect several plant families. When a problem is identified, follow its crop-specific rotation interval and combine rotation with sanitation, resistant varieties, clean stakes and tools, and other recommended controls.
1. Define the spaces you can rotate
Draw or list each raised bed, in-ground block, row, large container, greenhouse bay, or other growing location. Rotation works only when a crop moves to genuinely different soil. Shifting a tomato a few inches within the same bed does not move it away from that bed’s history.
2. Group crops by plant family
Write the family beside every crop in the current and previous plantings. These common groups cover many vegetable gardens:
- Nightshades
- Tomato, pepper, eggplant, tomatillo, and Irish potato.
- Brassicas
- Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, collards, mustard, radish, turnip, and arugula.
- Cucurbits
- Cucumber, squash, pumpkin, melon, watermelon, and gourds.
- Legumes
- Beans, peas, cowpeas, lentils, peanuts, and legume cover crops.
- Alliums
- Onion, garlic, leek, shallot, and chives.
- Carrot family
- Carrot, parsnip, celery, parsley, cilantro, dill, and fennel.
- Sunflower family
- Lettuce, endive, artichoke, sunflower, and chicory.
- Other useful groups
- Corn and grasses; beets, chard, and spinach; okra; and sweet potato.
3. Record every season in the bed
In a long growing season, one bed may hold several crops during a calendar year. Record each one in order. A spring broccoli crop followed by fall cabbage still repeats the brassica family, even though a summer crop grew between them.
4. Review problems as well as plantings
Mark beds where you observed wilt, root knots, recurring leaf spots, severe family-specific insects, or unexplained decline. Correct identification matters: rotation choices for a short-lived foliar problem can differ from those for a persistent soilborne disease.
5. Move the next family to a different bed
Where space permits, keep a family out of the same bed for at least three years. A diagnosed disease may require a longer interval or a specific nonhost crop. Use that disease-specific advice instead of a generic schedule.
6. Fit the rotation to real garden constraints
- Keep permanent crops permanent: asparagus, strawberries, perennial herbs, and similar crops are not moved annually. Plan the rotation around them.
- Honor light and structure: tall trellises, shade, irrigation zones, and bed dimensions may limit where a family can move.
- Count cover-crop families: mustard cover crops are brassicas and legume covers belong to the bean family; both can affect the next rotation choice.
- Use the best rotation you can: a partial rotation with accurate records is more useful than an elaborate schedule you cannot follow.
When the garden is too small for a long rotation
Prioritize moving crops that repeatedly suffer soilborne problems. Grow fewer members of that family for a season, use containers with fresh disease-free growing media, select resistant varieties, remove diseased residue, control host weeds, and clean reusable supports. Rotation remains useful, but it is one part of an integrated plan.
7. Update the record when the plan changes

Map, group, move, record
- Map the beds or growing locations that contain different soil.
- Group every crop and cover crop by plant family.
- Move the next family away for the longest practical interval.
- Record what was actually planted and any problems observed.
